Restoring a Broken $2 Tetris Handheld. 9999999 Games in 1

I bought this old broken Tetris style brick game hand held console for restoration for $2. You can also buy similar devices new for the same price, but sometimes it’s about the journey, not the destination. I don’t know what math they used to calculate the promised 9999999 games, but I think the real number is a bit under 3000, mostly different variation of Tetris. The console is badly yellowed and dirty, the audio doesn’t work, some screws are missing, and there is a lot of rust on the contacts.

I started by disassembling the console. Somehow I was surprised how cheap it was on the inside. Not sure what I expected… I found the audio was missing because one of the wire was loose. I suspect some parent may have done that to make the device silent because the sounds were really loud and irritating. The wire was easy to solder back on.

Second issue with the device was the corroded terminal for battery. This happens when a battery is left on the device and it leaks. This can sometimes ruin the motherboard but in this case everything was fine. I desoldered the terminals and put them in rust remover to get rid of the rust. After this I re-plated the terminals with nickel. Here’s a tutorial to DIY nickel plating I made:

It was necessary to prevent them from rusting again. If I wanted to do an upgrade I could have fitted new terminals from a Gameboy because those are made of copper which is far better conducting.

I also removed the yellowing from the plastic shell which was supposed to be colorless. For this I used the same retrobrighting method as always. H2O2 and UV-light. Full tutorial here:

It is very interesting to watch this man doing his arts and crafts, but no one can convince me he is not a closet serial killer (or a known one).

That’s crazy!! I had that exact same handheld! My parents bought it on a cruise ship when I was 6. You can never forget that awful repetitive music and weird Tetris options, makes sense someone would find a way to turn off that speaker permanently. But I still loved the hell out of that thing. lol

Hey Odd tinkering, I found a similar Tetris its a 999 in 1 tho, Well the issue is the screen doesnt show the screen as intended, I have to tilt it and look it from the side for it to be visible, otherwise its working as intended, do you know any way to fix this issue or I should just give a nice scrub to it and see if everything is in place it should be?

I know it will ruin the originality of the machine but looking at how much room there is inside this machine, it shouldn't be too difficult to retrofit a proper on/off switch into it and maybe a volume potentiometer

I actually had three of these. One was made in 2000 and actually read just 500in1 as opposed to that bunch of 9s, and was that kind of PCB green. The 2nd was a GBC/PSP styled yellow/orange one, and it was a bit more advanced, as IIRC it also had a built in calculator that served as some kind of standby mode. The 3rd was similar to the one pictured here, with the difference being that it was a metallic green (kinda like the emerald green Galaxy S6, but somehow turned matte instead of glossy) and had a black back. It was my cousin's (ironic since she's a girl, and she got it around 2011-12) but she gave it to me as she didn't like it.

BTW, cutting the speaker was pretty dumb. At least for me, since I clearly recall having a sound button to mute on all 3 brick games.

And ngl the boxes these came in were pretty nifty.

    I had this trash.
I actually had fun with it, and played every game, even tho it sucked and it was hard to see what was going on.
Now I have dozens of great Steam games I barely touched if at all, because I don't feel like it.
